Self Drive Safari

This was our last day at Zulu Nyala and we wanted to visit the Hluhluwe (Shushuwe) Game Reserve which was only a 45 minute drive from our lodge.  This reserve was established in 1897, covers over 237,000 acres and is the oldest national park in Africa.  Its also the birthplace of Rhino conservation and is credited with breeding the species back from extinction.  In 1900 there were less than 20 Rhino's in existence (all were within the reserve) and today there are over 10,000 worldwide.  The Reserve allows for self drive tours within its borders and so we set off to take in a small portion of its northern section.  Unfortunately, the weather did not co-operate as it rained heavily overnight and continued sporadically throughout the day.  However, we were glad to have had the chance to experience this amazing Reserve.  The next time we go, we will not do the self drive as you certainly can't beat having a trained guide take you to the rights spots and who has a lot keener eye to spot wildlife.
