Our amazing African Safari is finished but before we leave and move onto the rest of our South African adventure, Rita and I would like to thank Ian and Luis, two strangers who came into our lives for one evening in Vancouver, to share with us their experiences at Zulu Nyala. Their suggestions truly enhanced our visit there.
The plan today was to depart Zulu Nyala at 08:00 for the 3 hour drive to Durban airport, drop off the rental car, catch a 1.5 hour flight to Port Elizabeth, pick up a rental car and drive the 3.5 hours to Knysna (pronounced nice-na). If it had only been that easy. Everything went according to plan until we arrived at the Durban Airport Terminal and saw on the departure board that our flight was delayed 3 hours!!! We went to the check-in counter for South African Airways and they told us that the flight could be delayed longer than 3 hours. I asked if we could change our flight and fly to Johannesburg and connect to George (a town which is only a 1 hour drive from Knysna). She said she would have to check with her manager to see if this was possible as the connections were very tight. She came back and said no problem, they would cancel our original tickets and rebook us on the new routing. Wow, when was the last time you had an airline rebook your non-refundable economy ticket because their flight was delayed and at no cost? While we were being re-ticketed, I ran to the Avis car rental counter and explained that I now wanted to pick up our car at the airport in George instead of Port Elizabeth. No problem. They changed it in the computer in less than 5 minutes and told me the new rental was going to be less money than my original quote. Got to love the South African attitude of putting their slogans of "customers needs come first" into actual practice. The only bad news was that our luggage did not make the tight connection between Johannesburg and George. They promised to deliver our luggage by 10:00 the next day. We picked up our rental car without incident, plugged in our TomTom and headed for our B&B in Knysna, arriving about the same time as originally planned (19:00).
The B&B is called Two Angels and we had the "Lovers Nest" room, which was lovely and had a small balcony overlooking the Bay. Since we had no luggage to unpack, we headed for a store to pick up some essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) before heading to dinner at a lovely seafood restaurant that was recommended by our host. After such a long and stressful day we were more interested getting to our "Lovers Nest" for a good nights sleep.
Rita is ecstatic that I rented a Fiat 500 soft top and saved money on the car rental at the same time
